Schooling On Our Own Schedule and Thanksgiving

I tried to get us all mapped out for what we should do each day. I wanted to feel like there was all this structure to our days. Then I realized that life happens and in our family structure is overrated! LOL

We are learning as we go and day by day things change. Although my daughter is quite advanced I want her to learn something on a daily basis.

So I decided that we would take a look at Thanksgiving. I have found a pretty good unit study for Pre-K & Kinder kids at www.hubbardscupboard.org

We are going to teach it to anyone who wants to attend tomorrow after story time at the public library.  Niki is excited to do this little unit study. She is so interested in learning history! (which I love!) I am a history buff and I am happy to have a daughter to pass on my knowledge to.

We are also learning little by little what a Clan is and how it functions. I love learning and teaching about our family heritage!

Well from our Clan to yours have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Busy Busy Time...

Things in the Graham Clan have been hectic and busy! I am now teaching Sunday school at our church Stone Creek Baptist Church. I am very excited because I'm teaching grades 1-6 and I get to watch my little girl grow in her walk with Christ as well as the other lovely kiddo's in my class!

We are working toward giving the kids incentive to read their bible and learn the books of the bible. I'm trying to make learning fun! I hope that I can convey God's love to these children as they learn of His love for them and learn to how draw nearer to Him as well.

Home school is going well. I'm behind on blogging because we do not have internet at home right now and there are only limited amounts of time at the library each week so I don't always get to blogging.

Well time is short and I must go.

May God Bless Your path!

The Value of Self Control...

Working on homeschool and family history can be a chore! Lots to do and we are excited about finding some family members on the west coast!

I'm working on teaching my little about the value of patients and self-control. She is having issues with controlling her emotions and has been having some unfavorable out bursts. She seems to burst into tears at the drop of a hat and although I realize that at 4 that is fairly normal she has to learn soon that this is not acceptable in public especially!

It is not always easy but I've been spending as much time in the word as possible. I will be teaching a sunday school class at our church and hubby and I are hoping to start a hospitality ministry.  I am working on getting home more organized and getting a daily schedule in place and get us a little more organized. Although I've always prided myself on not being overly organized it is finally time to get Little One and I on a more structured schedule! This is also a lesson in Self Control to my daughter as we both have to have self discipline enough to stick to a schedule. I believe it will help us draw closer to God. I truly believe that!

well time is running out and I need to hop off here for today.

May God Bless you and keep you in all your ways!

Fall Soccer Is In Our Future and We Have Decided On A Schedule...

Nikirhe is going to be playing Soccer this fall! We are very excited to star this new journey in our family! I'm officially going to be a Soccer Mom!!!! YAY! I can't wait to support my little girl and her team! I know for the first couple of years it will be mostly about learning the fundamentals but it is going to be so much fun taking pictures of her learning and watching her grown and excel at a sport and not just academically. She is going to be good at anything she does and I'm thankful for that but I know God has a plan for this girl!

We are starting a new schedule of sorts on Monday. I thought I might share with you!

Monday:
Bible Study
Phonics
Handwriting
History

Tuesday:
Bible Study
Math
Handwriting
Reading

Wednesday:
Bible Study
Phonics
Handwriting
History

Thursday:
Bible Study
Math
Handwriting
Reading

Friday:
Story Time at the Library

Saturdays in Sept -Nov..
Soccer games!

What I love about this schedule is that we can change it anytime we need to, to fit in sudden changes. We can take our time and work on it throughout the day and she doesn't feel like she is being confined to a desk and chair all day.

We can have FUN!!! We can a history lesson anywhere!!!! :)
We can work at around Soccer practice!!! YAY!!

I'd love to know what kind of schedules you work out for  your family. Are you more of a traditionalist and have a more structured homeschool? Do you lean more toward unschooling?
Do you practice child lead learning more than anything else? I try to allow her to learn about what she is interested in but wanted to try giving her a format of some kind so she knows what to expect. She does well when she knows the plan ahead of time.

May God Bless You and Keep You In All You Do!

Verse of the Week

Short sweet and to the point!

Genesis 16:13
You are the God who sees.

This says a LOT about our God! He sees. What does he see? Let us take a moment to examine that.
I asked my 4 year old,  what does God see? These are her answers:

The Rainbow bridge
Rain
Sunshine
Kola bears
Us...
So I said lets talk about God seeing us for a min.
God can see our hearts
Our blood
Our bones
I don't know

"How about our attitude? "
Yeah our attitudes
Like our good ones and bad ones.

"That's right! How does God see our attitudes? "
I think he sees the bad ones and cries. Like when I get angry with .

"Wow, you're pretty smart! So how do you think we can change our attitudes to please God?"
I don't know...

"How about prayer?"
Yeah we can pray and ask God to help us! Right?

"That is exactly right sweetie! I'm so proud of you for understanding that God can help us change our attitudes! "

We went on to discuss how having a positive attitude while serving others blesses not only those we serve but God himself.

We ended our lesson with a prayer asking God to help us change our hearts so that we have better attitudes toward serving God, our family,  and others.

Summer reading and more.

We are spending the majority of our summer reading books and playing with cousins!
It has been so much fun to be able to allow Nikirhe have the time this summer to just be a kid and play and not focus too much on home school. However we are going to be at it full swing after our family reunion is over August 10th. We are looking forward to starting History lessons this fall and we are going to be doing some much needed structured lessons. I have been pretty laid back about homeschool thus far but I know she needs more structure and it will help her to have a printed schedule she can see. So I will be helping her by creating that for her.

Well I've got more work to do and I'm looking forward to blogging more about what we are working on and what I am learning in this Journey we call homeschool!

From our Clan to yours,
God Bless!

Why I Choose to Homeschool

We took some time off and started working on Phonics this week. Nikirhe is loving her phonics and loves learning! I am so blessed to have a little scholar on my hands.

When we chose to become homeschoolers our baby was just weeks old. We had always talked about it before we had children, but I always wondered if I would be able to teach my child(ren) what they need to know.
The more I researched the more confidence I gained that I COULD & CAN teach my daughter what she needs to know to get into a good college and become anything she desires to become.

I started reading to her as soon as we brought her home from the hospital. We even began using the Your Baby Can Read dvd system when she was 4 months old, by 18 months she was recognizing word on signs around town. She is now 4 and reads at a 2nd grade level!!! I am so very proud of my beautiful girl. She is now learning math and handwriting and we are exploring history as well.

I am looking forward to creating this Homeschooling association with the ladies down here is Southern Oklahoma! I hope we can get something set up and keep working together to give our children the best possible chance at a bright and brilliant future!

This is a partial list and I will update it as I come across more resources!

A Little Look at What We Do!

After taking some time off to get more organized and to regroup we are back at the homeschool journey!

I have a 4 year old who is working on mostly 1st grade curriculum. She is an excellent reader and now we are working on handwriting, and math.

We start each day off with prayer and bible verses. Then depending on what she is interested in we do worksheets and listen to some good classical music to promote neuro pathway development.

We are also learning sign language, and Spanish! I love being able to learn WITH my daughter. That is one of the joy's

She loves learning to write....when it's her idea! ;)

Another thing I love about teaching my daughter is that every time she does something I can PRAISE her! She is learning that she can be confident in her work and not seek constant approval through my frequent praise!  Since she excels in reading we spend extra time working on other subjects.

I have always loved reading, science and history as well and what most people call "useless Knowledge". I enjoy trivia and I hope she enjoys learning her whole life!

My theory is if I'm not learning something new I must be dead!!!

Why Homeschool?

Home School:

Gives children a firm foundation.

It's fun!

You get to learn with them!

You get to help them use what they learn.

We can bring the spritual aspect anytime.

We don't have to be in such a rush!

It's relaxed.

Chores- being at home gives you the chance to get to teach them to serve.

School work is DONE each day!

Sibling connection.

advances your child in a specific area.

Socialization_ church, sports, swim, playdates.

Sometimes we need help!

Don't be afraid to admit you need help!

BE IN THE WORD!

SHELTER YOUR CHILDREN!!!!

BE VIGILIANT!!!

Monitor movies, music, books & friends. Let them have boundries!

Be a model of what your children should be and do.

NONE of us are perfect and we should seek to give them a pure environment.

Pay attention to what's in their hearts.

Pray for them and be a role model!

Set boundries, one day they will understand!!!

Our Homeschool Journey

Hello,
I'm Gidgit. I am a wife of 15 years and a proud adoptive mom! I am currently homeschooling our 4 year old whom I started teaching to read at the age of 4 months. She is now reading on a second grade level and we are about to start 1st grade. We choose to home school year round and take breaks whenever we need them.

Niki is a very smart little girl and most people don't realize she is only four because she speaks like a little adult. She is my wonderful blessing. I am so amazed every day at how BIG her imagination is! She has imaginary brothers and sisters and one real little sister Gabriella who is 7 months.

This blog will serve as a way for us to share how and why we homeschool!
